Yesterday, the Victorian government enacted Australian Standard AS3959:2009 Construction of buildings in bushfire-prone areas, into Victorian building regulations.
All new homes in Victoria will now require a bushfire attack assessment. The new residential building standard covers ALL new buildings, alterations and additions.
The Victorian Building Commission has published a very helpful "Guide to building in Victoria after the bushfires". A new edition of Australian Standard AS3959:2009 has been published this week and is now enacted into the Victorian Building Code. For the rest of Australia AS3959:1999 continues in the BCA until 2010 or possibly 2011.
AS3959:2009 also applies in the ACT but for the rest of Australia AS3959:1999 is still current.
